Terrific color version of that commission by the prolific and awesome Please, give him some DA love by visiting his cool gallery, it'd be much appreciated! Hope you'll like it as much as me!!! Take care, gang!
I like the anatomy and body position of the character. The subtle weights of the lines and blacks portray the textures of the different parts of his suit well. I do not see anything that I can object against. After looking at it for a while, the only thing I can spot that I don't "like" is there is a lot more going on in legs than people realize and that the picture illustrates. The area just above the knee is loaded with big muscle heads (heads of the quadraceps), and most people leave them out. The picture is quite wonderful.
There is no relation with the character and the bg in this piece, other than that they exist to oppose each other. To pop the character from the warm BG, I would always use a cool colour, in this it was using the complimentary pairing of Orange vs. Blue (Secondary colour to opposite Primary colour).
A blue or blue hue'd BG would have lost Cap, as there would have been no real focal point. A desturated blue was tried and this seemed to me to be the best selection overall... I did try a few variants to make sure.
I could have sunk Cap into the BG scene using outline highlights and such but I didn't want him sitting in a Volcano.
